The Regent String Quartet
The Regent String Quartet is a young professional quartet that was formed at the Royal Academy of Music in 1995 by Caryn Cohen, Sarah Turner and Helen Godbolt, later joined by Emma Martin from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Whilst at the Royal Academy of Music they won the J B McEwan prize awarded for the best string quartet of the year. Since leaving the institution they have performed regular recitals in London and surrounding areas.
This
London based quartet has extensive experience in performing at wedding services
and receptions, corporate functions, a variety of parties including engagement
and garden parties and fund raising events.
The success of the quartet is due to its skill in selecting the right music for each occasion – and since its repertoire ranges from Bach to Bernstein there is always something to suit everyone. Although based in London the quartet has played in many prestigious venues across the country.
They have played at most major London hotels including The Dorchester, The Langham, The Lanesborough, Claridges, The Hyatt Carlton Tower and also at The Banqueting House, The Guildhall, The Tower of London and Stoke Park.
Previous engagements include a Christmas party at No. 11 Downing Street, exhibitions at the Tate Gallery and the Natural History Museum, a book launch at Searcy’s brasserie in Knightsbridge, a wedding reception at St James’ Palace, the launch of a passenger carrying balloon company at Tower Bridge and numerous fundraisers.
The Quartet receives coaching from members of the Alberni and Amadeus Quartets as well as giving coaching to many young amateur groups in and around London.
The quartet also performs in classical music concerts in an around London. Recent performances have included the Brighton Music Festival, the Hampstead and Highgate Music Festival, the Abinger Music Festival, the Burgh House Trust and a benefit concert for the Macmillan Cancer Fund.

The repertoire of the Regent String Quartet can be grouped into four separate categories: Traditional Classics Operatic Arias Lighter Classics Jazz & Popular Music These categories can be combined to provide a selection of varied music or if a particular ambience is required music may be selected from one or two groups. It is normal for Traditional Classics to be played during the wedding ceremony whilst all the categories are suitable for wedding receptions, engagement parties and dinners. The lists below provide some examples of the type of music included in each category however their repertoire extends far beyond this. It is possible for the quartet to cater for individual requests if given notice, as they are able to arrange our own music. Traditional Classics Their traditional classics are designed for more formal occasions including wedding receptions, corporate entertainment and garden parties. These include:- Vivaldi - the Four Seasons Mozart – Divertimento & early string quartets Bach – air on a G String Handel – Queen of Sheba & music from the Royal Fireworks Pachelbel – Kanon Purcell – Rondeaux from the Fairy Queen Lighter Classics The lighter classics selection includes popular classical music, which may be used in television or in films, that has been arranged for String Quartet. Mascagni – Intermezzo from Cavalleria Mozart – Arias from the Marriage of Figaro Rossini – Arias from the Barber of Seville Verdi – The Soldier’s Chorus Jazz & Popular Music This last selection includes jazz music, numbers from the musicals and pop/modern music arranged for string quartet.
